Maine Travel Guide

travel maine about us

Created and owned by Maine people, helping Maine businesses, for over 30 years!

Back in the early 70’s Ed Hemmingsen created the sunshine Guides as part of his college experience. Ed ran the Sunshine Books and developed a regional theme, held together by the state-wide book, ”The Master Guide“. Ed went on to become a very successful hotelier, once owning the 4-Diamond / 4-Star Bar Harbor Bluenose Hotel. Ed and his wife now own and operate the Belfast Bay Inn and Luxury Suites.

Ed’s understanding of the tourist industry catapulted the Maine travel guide books to success and made his little blue books an integral part of the Maine tourism business and it was the most widely distributed title at Maine’s Publicity Bureaus (now the Maine Tourism Association) throughout the state. Reade Brower, Publisher of Rockland’s weekly newspaper, The Free Press, worked out a deal with Ed and added the titles to his publishing arm which also included 7 Chamber of Commerce booklets from Bath to Belfast. The Sunshine name was retained and several regional books were added to the product line and the statewide “Master Guide” was re-introduced.

In 2003, the title of the guides changed from “Sunshine” to “travelMAINE” and www.gotravelmaine.com was created.

In 2007, Wendi Smith-Westleigh, a Maine native, stepped in as General Manager / Publisher of TravelMaine. Wendi’s background and 20+ years of sales and marketing experience were key to the continued success of TravelMaine. In 2008, through her guidance, two new titles were introduced: dineMAINE (Maine’s only statewide dining guide that includes information on Maine-made food and beverages) and gayMAINE (Maine’s only travel and relocation guide written and designed specifically for the GLBT market).

In 2009, Wendi bought Maine Sunshine, Incorporated from Reade Brower.

As travelMAINE (formerly known as the Sunshine Guides) enters its 35th season as a leading Maine travel guide publication, we’re pleased to announce several new additions and changes for 2010 that will better allow us to help our clients in successfully promoting their business to visitors of our great state.

We understand the strengths of our company and what we need to do to position ourselves for the future to best serve our customers and Maine tourists. With the following additions to our product line, Maine Sunshine, Inc. will be a premier tourist information resource for Maine: Mobile Marketing and Flip-to-Send (Video Postcard).

Finally, in 2010 the five (5) regional travelMAINE guides will be combined into one comprehensive statewide guide!

Distribution remains the cornerstone of the travel guides and we’ll continue to go all out in this area. Our guides are a primary source of information for several hundred AAA agencies throughout the U.S. and the CAA in Maritime Canada. They’re also found at all the State of Maine Information Centers and in chambers of commerce, hundreds of hotels, the Portland Jetport and major points of entry into Maine, the northbound Turnpike Travel Plazas (new in 2009) and hundreds of other advertisers (retailers and activities) throughout the state. They’re also found in the Massachusetts Information Centers. In short, the guides are everywhere!
