The Story of Maine Sunshine (GoTravelMaine.com)
Back in the early 70's Ed Hemmingsen created the Sunshine Guides as part of his college experience.
Ed ran the Sunshine Books and developed a regional theme, held together by the state-wide book, "The Master Guide". Ed
went on to become a very successful hotelier and just recently sold his 4 Diamond/4 Star Bar Harbor Bluenose Hotel.
After he graduated, he created the Guides and personally went out and sold the space to those businesses involved
in Tourism. Ed's understanding of the tourist industry catapulted the books to success and made his "little blue books"
an integral part of the Maine tourism business and it was the most widely distributed title at Maine's Publicity Bureau's
(now the Maine Tourism Association) throughout the state.
In the mid 1980's, Ed worked out a deal with the Publicity Bureau that would ensure that his books continued to be
published. The Publicity Bureau ran the books as Ed pursued other business ventures until 1989 when Ed decided to take
back the books and put them back into the private sector.
Reade Brower, Publisher of a Rockland weekly newspaper, The Free Press, worked out a deal with Ed and added the
titles to his publishing arm which also included 7 Chamber of Commerce booklets from Bath to Belfast. The Sunshine
name was retained and several regional books were added to the product line and the state-wide, "Master Guide", was
re-introduced. For more than 15 years, Sunshine has continued to be an integral part of the Maine tourism industry
and is distributed throughout the Maine Tourism Association system as well as AAA's, local outlets and throughout the
entire United States and throughout the world.
In 2002 we had an outside company complete a survey to find out what the industry's thoughts were about some
innovative ideas we were considering. As a result, the "Sunshine" guides became "TravelMaine" guides. Maine Sunshine
Inc. continues to publish the now named TravelMaine guides to Southern Maine, Portland/Freeport, Mid Coast and Bar
Harbor/Bangor. The Maine State Four Seasons has been expanded to include Outdoor Recreation and Scenic Drives. In
2005 a new title "Fairs and Festivals" was added. TravelMaine will continue to develop and improve upon its already
extensive web site and presence. |
